Our Travels Part Four: Monteverde

After leaving La Fortuna we traveled on some of the most amazingly treacherous roads I have ever experienced. We pretty much drove straight up a mountain to the very peak where the small community of Monteverde sits. Here lies one of the most incredibly bio-diverse areas on earth: the Cloud Forest.

Here in the misty clouds the temperature was downright cold for us (in the 60s) where clouds and mist and rain are most common. It was lush green (reminded us of home) and very rugged (to travel anywhere meant peaked hills that challenged your legs and your vehicle’s engine).

Here we saw many more sloths, capuchin monkeys, jaguars and tapirs (the last two in a rescue center).

The sloths were my favorite:

The cabin where we stayed was a generational farm dating back to the fourth family to ever settle on the top of this mountain. We heard stories of their settlement and were treated as family. It was a very special place!

This was the last place we stayed before returning to Sámara. We enjoyed our two weeks of travel but were definitely grateful to return back to our Costa Rican “home.”
